Chess Trainer: Tactics & Play

Learn chess by playing it — lessons you win yourself, mate puzzles and an offline bot

Games · Worldwide · Free; coin packs, or Pro monthly, yearly or lifetime

Chess you learn by playing it: short lessons that end in positions you must win yourself, engine-verified checkmate puzzles, an on-device bot, Stockfish levels from 1350 to 2850 Elo and a move-by-move game review.

What it does

◷

The Road

Short lessons you play, not read. Each idea arrives move by move, then three positions where you deliver the mate yourself and a boss game to seal the unit.

◎

Checkmate puzzles

Mate in 1, 2 and 3, every solution engine-verified, across 29 named patterns from back rank and smothered mate to Anastasia.

◇

The Mate-dex

A card for each pattern, engraved the first time you deliver that mate yourself in a real position.

♞

A bot for every level

An on-device bot that plays with no internet, free forever, and rated Stockfish levels from 1350 to 2850 Elo on our servers.

▤

Game review

Every move graded from Brilliant to Blunder, an accuracy score for both sides and the engine's move — kept for good, and reopened free even offline.

◱

Pass and play

Two players on one iPhone or iPad. No account, no login, no ads.

Common questions

Is Chess Trainer free?

Lessons, puzzles and the on-device bot are free. Stockfish games and game reviews run on our servers and cost coins; you get free coins every day and can buy coin packs. Chess Trainer Pro — monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime purchase — makes both unlimited.

Can I play without an internet connection?

Yes, against the on-device bot, and a game review you have already run reopens offline. Stockfish games and new reviews need a connection because the engine runs on our servers.

Is it for beginners?

Yes. The Road starts with short lessons played move by move, and each idea ends with positions you win yourself.

How strong is the computer?

The rated levels run from 1350 to 2850 Elo and are powered by Stockfish, the strongest open-source chess engine.

Which languages does it support?

Thirteen, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
